Children At Greater Risk Of Mental Illness

Tags: , ,

It is very alarming to note how studies show that causes of were predominant at the teen-age formative years of a child particularly the 14 year-old age bracket. Very alarming with the danger sigs and signals sounded off this early age. And consider this too – according to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, one of out ten children has some sort of mental illness that prevents them fully functioning at home, in the school and their respective communities. And there is more – millions of children worldwide suffering from depression, children developing anxiety-disorders, children not getting proper help and treatment despite diagnosis of a mental illness, children left untreated inspite of mental illness.

What causes mental illness to them in such a young age though? Apart from the gnawing concern of school or neighborhood bullying, extensive discussions here similarly tells of contributing factors pointing to a highly stressful event in a child’s life, having been victimized by major trauma or sadly, change in brain chemisty upon the formative years of the child brought by poor or bad nutrition. However and whatever it is, it is never the child who is at fault but the factors surrounding his or her childhood that turns them into a sufferer of . Sad and gruesome incidents make it in the day’s headlines or even a movie material that depicts the sufferings of children with mental illness.

Whether it is depicted positively or not is yet another story in itself. Truth of the matter is, the numbers continue to rise on children with mental illness. Bigger truth of the matter too is that these numbers have grown to an alarming proportion that these children even no longer exist with names but mere faces and addition to the already increasing statistics. Worse yet, cases of mental illness afflicting children shows how poorly treatment and management is done, how so much more are left untreated and undiagnosed. Danger signs at the earliest time are there. Mental illness does not develop nor manifest overnight.

Look at these signs in an unfinished homework, a white lie told, a violent reaction made, or outright unusual behaviour for someone his or her age. These early signs may also be their call for help that if heeded, will best treat and manage mental illness. Early intervention is still the best cure. Among the help that can be done in our very homes would be to ensure proper nutrition of the child – healthy eating habits vis a vis healthy child’s lifestyle. And keep your eyes open at all times and keep track of any suspicious action. Keep communication lines open too so you as a parent or guardian can best address the problem or child’s concern.

And best of all, the option of seeking professional help. Mental illess while preventable is treatable and manageable with the assistance of a trained professional. Early intervention for an early permanent cure. calls for appropriate action more so when it hits an innocent child.
