The convenience of fast food has been in fact designed for such a lifestyle which is why the industry concerned has become indispensable. Even more so, the fast food industry has expanded and its extensive predominance gave the public an easy yet apparently destructive option. Owing to the abundance of fast food, obesity statistics are constantly on the rise and the severity of the problem has been aggravated.

It may not be surprising to see the staggering prevalence of obesity in the United States and the United Kingdom as fast food restaurants lurk in every corner of such countries. In fact, fast food has become integral into their dining culture. Other than a massive increase in obesity, associated health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular risks abound in these countries as well. For the first time, China is beset by the problem of childhood obesity now that they have opened their gates to western chains in major cities. In the United States, children in the current setting eat approximately five times the amount of fast food than children in the 1980’s.



The statistics in Europe are not far behind. There is a definite link between consumption of fast food and the increased rate of the health and cosmetic dilemma of obesity. Such a fact has been established by a research project conducted in the United States for a span of 15 years. It was indicated in the study that individuals who ate in fast food restaurants more than twice a week are four and a half pounds heavier on the average than those who do so occasionally. Furthermore, the findings obtained from the research cited that fast food junkies are twice as likely to become obese.

The link between fast food and obesity is quite apparent. Fast food favorites such as burgers and fries have high fat and sodium content. Other than that, such foods have a surfeit of calories. A super size meal contains more calories than the amount an average person should consume in a day. It may be worth taking into consideration that junk food will not keep an individual feel sated for long as such foods are lacking in fiber and are often made of processed foods. Such foods basically rate high on the glycemic index meaning they provide a quick blood sugar rise which falls as quickly as well giving rise to hunger.

It is only expedient that individuals, especially children limit their fast food intake so as to curtail the rising obesity epidemic. Rather than allowing such foods to create a legacy of ill-health to children, it is best that adults take responsibility in inculcating healthy eating habits primarily within themselves. It is only then that they can set a proper example of healthy eating consisted of home-cooked, well-balanced meals and warding off the impending health hazards brought about by .
