The Fight Against Obesity In Children

Tags: , , ,

There is an epidemic of in the United States. And it has come to the point of being alarming. What contributed to this prevailing dilemma? Is there anybody to blame? What can be done about it? Our dietary culture can be the primary culprit behind obesity. Think of how fast food has become imbedded into our psyches. Eating out means fast food. Celebrations and family get togethers. The essence of them is certainly commendable. After all, celebrations and get togethers strengthen peer and family ties. But what about the fast food behind them? Think of how much calories and fat, sodium and sugar they contain.

Aren’t these elements the foremost contributors to us being obese? Everything has to be taken in moderation. So it is with fast food. But the thing is, fast food has become our staple. We cannot go on a week without fast food. That’s the sad story of it. It is not surprising then why one third of all adults in the United States are obese. The problem of obesity in our young ones is just as frightening. Obese children are more likely to become obese adults. This goes to say that childhood obesity has to initially be addressed. Why are our children becoming obese? in children has become more alarming.

More and more of the younger generation are becoming obese. What is it with our times which aggravate childhood obesity? Primarily, there is our dietary culture. It is our growing intimate relationship with fast food that leads us into the realm of obesity. And we pass on this tendency to our children- our love for fast food. Then there is our lifestyle- we are becoming more sedentary. This includes our children. We as adults are wedged on sedentary office jobs eight hours a day for five days a week. And what do we do on weekends? Eat out with the family.

Or watch a movie. Or better yet spend the day on the couch watching tv. What about our children? They are no longer oriented to enjoy the outdoors. Rather they spend hours in front of the computer playing games. Technology has made living convenient. But maybe it has come to the point of making living too convenient. So convenient that we hardly move. Lest we forget what physical activity has been all about. Physical activity is the primary antithesis to obesity. This may be where a large percentage of the American populace failed. The result? A dreadful scenario of rampant obesity.

Genes is also a major reason why an individual or a child becomes obese. Obese parents are more likely to produce obese children. But there is more to the story than genes and obesity. Obese parents may not just physiologically influence their children. But psychologically, too. They not only pass on their genes to their children, but their disobliging eating habits and lifestyle as well. It takes responsibility and initiative on the parents part to fight among themselves and their children. This involves the resolve to set a good example of living with a proper lifestyle and eating habits.
