When one has a headache, it’s not just annoying. A headache can come to the point of being excruciating, and yes, infuriating. A headache in itself is painful. This can be further be aggravated by one thinking how inconvenient it is. And so one may think of relaxing in the hopes of alleviating the headache. Relaxation does usually relieve a headache, right? Perhaps with migraine headaches, but not in the case of . In fact, relaxing can cause the worsening of cluster headaches. That’s rather ironic. But such is one of the reasons why a cluster headache is called a suicide headache.

The onset of cluster headaches is quite different from that of migraines. Cluster headaches have sudden and extremely painful attacks. They can last for 5 minutes when one gets lucky to the worst case scenario of having the headaches for three hours to months. Cluster headaches also have their onslaughts at the most inopportune time- when one is asleep at night. It can only be anticipated that cluster headaches can become so exasperating. Cluster headaches greatly disrupts sleep and with agonizing pain at that. There’s actually more to - they go with other symptoms, too. These symptoms can be nasal congestion, pupil changes and a drooped eyelid.

They often accompany the unilateral pain of a cluster headache behind or above the eye. How is a cluster headache different from a migraine? Both are actually vascular headaches. But the thing is, cluster headaches affect more men than women. It is actually the contrary when it comes to migraines. An aura and some neurological disturbances manifest with migraines. These may cause vision disturbance and tingling in the arms and legs. When one has a migraine, they may see an aura yet feel no head pain. Relaxation usually relieves a migraine, but it can worsen a cluster headache. What is seen to be effective in alleviating cluster headaches is intensive exercise.

Migraine attacks last from hours to a whole day. But one’s agony is prolonged with cluster headaches. Cluster headaches fraught one with several, sudden attacks. And the pain may disappear in a matter of weeks and even months. The causes of cluster headaches remain to be unknown. However, it has been presupposed that the headaches are derived from the dilution of the blood vessels. The brain itself does not actually feel the pain. But the widening of the arteries can cause pain. Cluster headaches may also have the tendency to attack at the same time everyday. This has led to the theory that the headaches may also be associated with a hypothalamus abnormality.

A person’s biological clock is actually controlled by the hypothalamus. Painkillers like Aspirin, Ibufprofen and Paracetamol may be able to treat migraines. But they may not be effective with cluster headaches. Oral treatments may in fact come too late with this form of headaches. Other than intensive exercise, injections and oxygen therapy may just be able to remedy . Cluster or suicide headaches are apparently more difficult to treat than migraines. In this sense, a medical professional’s opinion is necessary.
