Merely A Heel Pain, But Debilitating

Tags: , , ,

A significant proportion of individuals may have suffered from a condition in which there is pain radiating from the sole of the foot towards the big toe. Many may have the idea that this condition is inconsequential. But think how debilitating it can become as the feet carries the whole weight of the body.

Heel pain due to plantar fasciitis can be so agonizing especially early in the morning when an individual gets up from bed and puts their feet on the floor. Such a trivial daily routine can become dreadful due to heel pain. What exactly is heel pain due to plantar fasciitis? The sole of the foot is medically termed as the plantar and fascia on the other hand means gristle.

The suffix “–itis” generally means inflammation, and when those words are compounded, we can derive a meaning that heel pain due to plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the gristle on the sole of the foot. As with all things medical, it is best to gain a better understanding of heel pain so as to be able to gain reassurance and to find relief.

Heel pain can cause a significant distress when walking, and the condition generally manifest in the morning as the fascia or the gristle of the foot tightens up overnight due to the inflammation. A searing heel pain which spreads on to the big toe is experienced as the body’s weight is put onto the foot and the tightened fascia is stretched.

In some cases, a heel pain inflammation can encourage calcium or the growth of a new bone along the area of the gristle on the sole of the foot creating a spurred effect on the heel when seen in an x-ray. Thus, heel pain is often times termed by doctors as the condition of having a heel spur as well.

Several factors are known to be the underlying precursors of heel spur and its associated heel pain. The most common cause of heel pain is said to be poor footwear and a prolonged walk such as wearing Wellington boots during winter. Tightened calf muscles or Achilles tendon tissues, flat feet and other changes in the shape of the foot’s arch can also cause the development of the condition.

Plantar fasciitis or a heel spur can beset individuals of all ages, but it has been seen to be most prevalent among the elderly. Individuals who are obese or overweight are also more apt to suffer from heel pain. Although it may take months, heel pain associated with a heel spur generally subsides on its own but if one does not have the patience to wait for a considerable period there may be some treatment measures which can be taken.

Physical therapy which includes massage and stretches can be considered for heel pain although this measure may take a while. Conventional methods such as anti-inflammatory medications and injection of a steroid and local anesthetic are also options but they can have side effects aside from being painful. Orthotic insoles and heel cushions may relieve heel pain but they can be uncomfortable in the shoes.
