So it’s that time of the month which so many women dread. It does get swooshy, and sometimes it feels so messy. Worse, it can be painful causing you to wince and writhe now and then. More often though, menstrual cramps are tolerable. Menstruation being a normal and regular process for most women is often a phenomenon they have learned to cope with.
But if it so happens that your periods have become too painful, then you ought to be concerned. When your painful periods have caused a significant disruption in your normal routine, you should begin to be mindful. What if your painful periods last longer than normal, and your gynecologist hasn’t helped you so far? You primarily have to know that there are female health problems which underlie your painful periods.

Among these female health issues are endometriosis or adenomyosis. So first off, what is endometrioisis? Endometriosis is a condition wherein the endometrial lining of your uterus grows out of your uterus. This is an irregularity because the endometrial lining is supposed to grow inside your uterus. During your monthly cycle, the endometrial lining is discharged from your body.
Usual pain or cramping during your menstruation is caused by the uterus trying to expel the lining. If you suspect you have endometriosis, it’s best that you talk to your doctor. There are several treatment options for this condition. And what about adenomyosis? Adenomyosis on the other hand results from your endometrial lining growing into your uterus.
Painful periods take place with this condition because you bleed inside your uterine wall. An enlargement of the uterus could also result. Some doctors believe that adenomyosis develops due to estrogen dominance in the body. For treatment of adenomyosis, some doctors prescribe a progesterone-only pill. While this treatment measure does help, the treatment it offers is merely short term, that is, it is a “quick fix”.
Regarded as the ultimate “cure” for adenomyosis is hysterectomy. Medications are also used to treat adenomyosis. Even devices like IUD’s are sometimes resorted to. Another “option” which is considered as the best remedy for adenomyosis is pregnancy. After all, progesterone is predominant in a woman’s body during pregnancy, thus it can resolve the particular issue of estrogen dominance.
But then again, once the pregnancy is over, it might as well be anticipated that adenomyosis will recur. Apparently, a woman has to be wary of taking birth control pills when suffering from adenomyosis. Painful periods due to adenomyosis is due to too much estrogen in the body. Some birth control pills are high in estrogen content.
These two female health concerns are possible causes of painful periods. However, it may be difficult for the doctor to diagnose them. For one thing, other conditions with similar symptoms (such as fibroids) must primarily be ruled out. But painful periods are discomforting. Much more so if they cause you to curl up in bed and perennially pop pain medications.
Being wedged in your bed and agonizing with painful periods for days is not normal. If your painful periods cause a major interruption in your normal routine, then it’s time that you seek professional help.
