Self-expression is one of the best forms of therapy. Expressing one’s thoughts and emotions can take the heavy load of pent up negative energy within an individual which can be the possible cause of their illness. Undoubtedly, it brings a sense of relief and release bringing about a feeling of liberation. When it comes to self-expression, one of the most effective media is art. And this is where comes in to actualize the abstract muddle of patients which can eventually lead to healing. Such patients may include highly functioning autistics. Individuals with high functioning autism can be taught to express themselves through different kinds of therapy.

Through art therapy, an individual is allowed to explore various issues such as those involving life changes, family issues, abuse, loss and overall development. Art therapy is either carried out on individual counsel or as a group process. Artwork involved in art therapy may also be created spontaneously by the patient or upon suggestions made by the therapist.

Art therapy is evidently fun and it does not rely on language or verbal skills. Other than that, art does not require any skills or experience in art at all which is why this form of therapy has been effective and beneficial. Through art therapy, an individual has increased self awareness and improved social skills. It enables an individual to develop problem solving skills and changes their behavior as well. When carrying art therapy, one is also allowed to engage in creative thinking and to solely focus on the activity at the moment and shut out any intrusive thoughts. is conducted with the supervision of an art therapist, so prior to resorting to this form of therapy, the professional must be sought.

Art therapists function in a number of environments such as psychiatric or general hospitals, geriatric or oncology wards as well as rehabilitation and counseling centers and schools. It is best to gain thorough knowledge of an art therapist’s educational background, skills, experience and character prior to hiring their services.
