The Widely Debated Chelation Therapy

Tags: , ,

During World War I, it has been noted that the use of poisonous gases was rampant. It was during this period as well when chelating agents were initially used. Primarily, there was Dimercaprol which is basically a name given to the British Anti-Lewisite known as BAL. Dimercaprol, an organic compound closely related to mercaptans, contain sulfur. Mercaptans have properties which enable them to react to poisonous metals in the body, capture them or otherwise form compounds with them. In certain cases, Dimercaprol was used to bind arsenic compounds in the body which was used for poisoning and through such a process, arsenic was removed from the body without instigating any harm.

The process involved is in some ways associated with what is termed as . What exactly is the nature of chelation therapy? Chelation therapy is basically a procedure employed to eliminate toxic heavy metals from the body. In such a process, the use of chelating agents is primarily applied. As much as there is a wide and constant debate pertaining to chelation therapy, there are both conventional and alternative approaches in which the procedure can be applied. There are those who assert that chelation therapy is an effective procedure capable of treating considerable chronic cases and disorders and there are those who argue that the therapy entails much danger to apply.

Those who are of the same opinion with the latter argument declare that significant risks and dangers can arise out of the use or misuse of chelation therapy as there are cases wherein can instigate hyprocalcaemia and a decrease in blood coagulation. However, chelation therapy is conceived with strong hope by many. This following adheres with the strong belief that the use of chelating agents through chelation therapy is tremendously helpful in extracting poisonous heavy metals from the system. In the subsequent years following World War I, there were upgrades in chelation therapy as there have been discoveries of other chelating agents which bind with metallic ions and render such elements less chemically reactive.

As a consequence, chelating agents then allow them to be excreted to the body without causing any damage. Conventional medicine makes use of chelation therapy in treating conditions such as acute mercury poisoning as well as plutonium, iron, arsenic and lead poisoning. To warrant the use of chelating agents, the patient’s health must in a great deal of risk. Several means of applying chelating agents is intramuscular, orally and intravenously. As an alternative measure, chelation therapy is used for treatment of coronary heart disease and other degenerative diseases. Chelating agents are applied into the body intravenously and are then believed to slow down or reverse the progression of such conditions in which age related diseases are included.

Alternative medicine particularly makes use of chelation therapy for treatment of children with autism as this neuro-developmental problem is considered as a result of exposure to heavy metal poisoning by the alternative approach. In this sense, is regarded as a helpful treatment measure by alternative medicine.
