My Son’s Alarming Double Vision

Tags: , ,

“Mom, I see double”, my son Marky said one evening while he was playing and I was doing the dishes. “That’s strange sweetie. Do you feel anything else?”, I asked. “My head gets dizzy when I see double”, Marky said. That made me puzzled afterwhich I began to feel alarmed. I told Marky to go to his room because it was bedtime. While doing the dishes, I was thinking about my son’s . Double vision at the age of 10? I shuddered, but then again I thought, it’s best to see the doctor. I talked to my husband about it, then the next day we set up a doctor’s appointment.

At 2pm, we brought Marky to an optometrist. The doctor began a thorough check on his eyes. Marky passed test after test. Perfect vision for my son. I was relieved, then I tried to trick him by inducing double vision. “Now I see four of them”, Marky declared. I sniggered, happy that my son is well and still playful. But to my surprise, the doctor said something that I couldn’t master. It wiped the smirk right off my face. The doctor said “ We may have to send your son to an ophthalmologist, or perhaps a pediatrician for an MRI”. I was silent, my mind was still for a while.

And then lots of other thoughts raced through it. What if my son’s double vision indicates a grave condition or disease? The doctor set up an appointment with an ophthalmologist for the next three weeks. In the next few days, Marky complains that his double vision was getting worse. As I heard my son complaining about his double vision, the more frantic I became. So I googled “pediatric double vision” again and again. I hoped I’d find answers on my son’s problem. In the intervening weeks, I was researching and researching on “pediatric double vision”. And I didn’t like what I found.

There were a myriad of diseases and conditions associated with “pediatric double vision”. There were numerous possible ominous explanations for "pediatric double vision". That was the longest three weeks of my life. I was distressed with the idea of what Marky's double vision might be about. My husband and I went to see the ophthalmologist a few days ago. We were eager and yet nervous as to what the doctor had to say. What could my son’s double vision be about? What if my son loses his sight? Or worse, what if his double vision has something to do with his brain? The doctor performed even more tests.

Tests which looked like more medieval than the preceding ones. All throughout, my husband and I sat silent. My thoughts wandering to all the ominous explanations for pediatric double vision. The doctor put drops on Marky’s eyes. Then he performed more tests. Finally, the doctor spoke. My husband and I held our breath. “Your son will grow out of his double vision. Eventually, his condition would disappear”, the doctor declared. My husband and I were puzzled. “What do you mean?”, I blurted. Then the doctor said. “Your son has when he crosses his eyes”.
