The Major Considerations For Laser Eye Surgery

Tags: , ,

Advancements in technology have generally served to promote convenience and a better quality of life to a majority. Technology which is progressively revolutionizing and infiltrating the society has delivered tremendous advantages in various fields especially in health and medicine. One of the remarkable breakthroughs in the medical science field is . Those who have opted to undergo laser eye surgery have gained significant benefits out of the procedure as it has made them regain the vital function of seeing. Laser eye surgery as a surgical procedure has by far been proven to be safe and highly efficient and has gained a wide popularity in the recent years.

Laser eye surgery has been effective in correcting vision problems such as blurred vision, shortsightedness, farsightedness and other eye impairment conditions. As much as those with vision problems expect magical results from laser eye surgery, it certainly does not work that way as it is merely a procedure. Certain people may benefit from laser eye surgery than others as its employment is dependent on individual conditions. For those who have completely lost their vision, may no longer be helpful nor for those who have vision problems associated with the brain. It is neither appropriate for individuals with age-related vision problems such as Presbyopia.

Laser eye surgery is only suitable for those who have vision problems involving the cornea or the lens of the eye such as Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness) and Astigmatism. Candidates who are fit to undergo laser eye surgery are selected. For those who have myopia which means that they can see objects up close but not distant ones, a severe case of this vision impairment will not be corrected by laser eye surgery. The same can be said with extreme stages of astigmatism. The procedure will not be beneficial as well to those who have large pupils as it will not reach the areas where it needs to.

The eye procedure will most likely to be helpful for those with normal bad vision such as when the eyeball has stopped growing, but younger individuals cannot undergo laser eye surgery as it cannot manage the future growth of the eyeball. Pre-operative tests generally determine the indications and contraindications of an individual’s eye condition, and if one becomes a fitting candidate for laser eye surgery, certain measures are to be considered before undergoing the procedure. First, the patient should be in good health and that includes being free from diabetes or other disorders that retard healing. Before going through laser eye surgery, that patient’s eyes must also be healthy.

It means that there are no indications of pus or random blood leakage. Unpredictable healing may arise from a previous major eye surgery, so it is inadvisable for a patient who has gone already gone through an eye procedure to undergo laser eye surgery. LASIK or Laser in-situkeratomileuis and Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) are the two major types of laser eye surgeries. More patients prefer the LASIK procedure as it is more popular. Candidates for LASIK eye surgery must be 18 years old or above and with stable glasses or contact lens prescription for at least two years. Prior to this procedure, medications such as steroids or immunosuppressants must be avoided.
